Why do cars need mates?

Oh, so sorry, misunderstood ... the term to automate, not auto mate. Didn't really misunderstand, just playing with words trying to be funny. Funny thing is automation is a serious matter. Depending on who is looking at the function of automating a manufacturing plant, it can be as serious as putting workers out of work or as serious as saving time, money and materials. Am not here to litigate either view but understand the reasoning behind each position.
We have customers who typically are a combination of both manual labor and automated labor. For instance, a structural steel fabricator will use some automated equipment for production of materials and then manual labor for the of line needs, transport, erection, installation and finishing touches. They use robotic welders and then human welders. They employ people to drill holes on site but have drill lines at their facility for the primary drilling needs. Advancing technologies have and will continue to reduce the number of people required to work in such a facility. Still, humans will be needed. It's just a matter of skills required. Education must and will change accordingly. Preventative maintenance and repair services will be learned to gain good paying jobs with automated factories.
